The LeaderShape Institute is an intensive and energizing six-day student program that teaches key leadership issues. The 5th annual LeaderShape will be held May 12th – 17th, 2008, at Pineywoods Camp in Groveton, TX. Students can be nominated to attend the LeaderShape Institute through their academic departments or through various departments within the Division of Student Affairs. The LeaderShape Institute at Texas A&M is open to freshmen, sophomore, and junior level students who are interested in producing extraordinary results while also developing a commitment to lead with a high level of integrity. It is a unique opportunity for Aggies to interact with others from across the campus and across the A&M system, and to focus on developing in the key leadership issues of vision, partnerships, integrity, results, reflection, and personal growth. Each student who participates in LeaderShape is encouraged to embrace “a healthy disregard for the impossible” and to create a vision of something that he or she would like to see developed, changed, or improved in his or her campus or community. Upon returning to campus after completing the Institute, participants continue to work toward making their visions become realities.
In addition to creating a vision, specifics of the institute include: a Team Challenge Course (a half-day outdoor team-building experience), an evening with a Guest Leader Panel in which participants are exposed to “real world” business, industry or education role models, quality facilitators from a variety of backgrounds, and learning and sharing in small groups called “Family Clusters”.
Since its inception in 1986, The LeaderShape Institute has developed a national reputation as one of the premier leadership development programs for young adults. More than 20,000 young people from more than 500 different colleges, universities, corporations, and organizations across America have graduated from the program. The quality of The Institute has been acknowledged through grants from leading corporations and foundations. Accenture is currently a major sponsor of the Texas A&M University session LeaderShape. Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to apply to attend LeaderShape?
Yes. You must fill out an application online in order to attend, even if you have been nominated by an advisor or professor.
- What does it cost to attend LeaderShape?
There is a $25.00 cost for students who are selected to attend LeaderShape. This fee should be paid at the Preparation Meeting in April. (This cost is not meant to deter any students from applying! If you think you are unable to attend LeaderShape for financial reasons, please contact Sarah Edwards at sedwards@stuact.tamu.edu to discuss your situation.)
- How many students are selected to attend The LeaderShape Institute?
60 Aggies are selected to attend LeaderShape each year.
- When will I hear if I have been selected to attend LeaderShape?
Students will be contacted about whether or not they have been selected to attend The LeaderShape Institute by Friday, April 4, 2008. However, students nominated by an academic or student affairs department are automatically accepted into the program.
- What are the travel arrangements to get to LeaderShape?
Participants will meet at the College Station campus and ride a bus to the LeaderShape site. Parking passes will be provided for those who do not have one, so that every can leave their cars together (night passes are not valid for parking during this week).
- Can I drive myself to the location?
No. All student participants need to ride the bus together.
- If I am living in the Residence Halls, can I leave my things in my room through LeaderShape and collect my stuff when I get back?
I’m afraid not. The residence halls are used during the summer, so you still have to adhere to the move-out date set by your hall and store your things elsewhere before the Monday when LeaderShape begins. (One exception to this is if you are planning to attend Summer Session I and live on campus, you can pay a fee (usually $100-$150) for interim housing.)
- What time do participants leave on Monday?
You should plan on being at the College Station campus no later than 11:30 on Monday, May 12th (location TBD).
- What time can I expect to return on Saturday?
Barring any unforeseen events on the ride back, you can plan on being back in College Station no later than 3pm on Saturday.
- Is there any sort of dress code?
Definitely not! We do a lot of activities sitting on the ground and outside, so the main thing is to be comfortable. That being said, slightly nicer attire is encouraged for the Guest Leader Panel and professional dress is required for commencement on the last morning.
